TEXTBOOK READING: Seeing the Light, pp. 28-56.
SUPPLEMENTAL READING:
Click on the titles below to open a new window of text to supplement the book, gleaned from a variety of sources, some even written by yours truly. The are presented in the order in which they would be introduced in the class lecture.
LENSES: Goes into more detail on how they are made, their shapes, and applications, thanks to literal cut and paste from a variety of manufacturers' cataogs.
LENS MAKER'S FORMULA: Melles Griot shows how to calculate the focal length of a lens.
DERIVATION OF THE DEFINITION OF OPTICAL INFINITY: Very important in the definition of focal length.
APPLICATIONS OF CONJUGATE RATIOS: A well-done weighty tome, even if I do say so myself.
APPLICATIONS OF CONJUGATE RATIOS FOR CONCAVE MIRRORS: Same zones as above, except for mirror instead of lenses.
The NOT-SO-EXCITING LIVES OF NEGATIVE LENSES AND CONVEX MIRRORS: Says it all.
MAGNIFICATION: A presentation of concepts and examples to clarify the subject of magnification.
The SECRET OF THE MIRAGE REVEALED: The Confidential Owner's Manual.
CONE MIRROR PHOTOGRAPHS: One of the best projects ever turned in!
The SEVEN DEADLY ABERRATIONS: Maybe I went overboard on this one, but someone needed to explain all this to artists! All these aberrations were demonstrated to the class with a large, 300 mm diameter condensing lens from and 8" by 10" enlarger.
TEST TARGETS: Optics Guide by MellesGriot to the rescue again! Students viewed the test target with their own eyes, a loupe, slide projector, overhead projector, and a microscope!
FLAT-BED SCANNER RESOLUTION TEST: A practical application of the above.
EVALUATING A MICROSCOPE WITH THE RESOLUTION TARGET: Another similar to the above.
IRIS DIAPHRAGMS AND OTHER APERTURES: How they work.
The f/NUMBERING SYSTEM: Take it slow and easy and you'll understand the wisdom of how these numbers work.
LENS TEST: Another application of the USAF Resolution Target, this time throwing f/# into the mix, with a very visual demonstration of a cheap versus expensive enlarging lens. Photos ofthe heads of hair and USAF targets would have been looked at in class, seeing them on-line does not resolve the finer details.
OPTICS CLEANING SUPPLIES: How to attack this thorny issue.
